The mob had searched for Chitondo at first light. They trashed his home village a few miles to the north, threatened his mother with exile to Zaire, kicked his wife until she cried and until she stopped crying. At dawn they finally located Chitondo cowering in the roof beams of a girlfriend’s hut. They threw rocks at him and knocked him to the ground. He begged for his life, offered them a thousand dollars if they would spare him. A thousand dollars! More money than any of them would ever see.

“Where would Chitondo get a grand?” I asked Jere after it was over. “Was he a thief?”

“He didn’t have it. He was trying anything. He knew he was in trouble.”

“Why didn’t they take it?”

“Nothing would have stopped them,” Jere said. “He was not a good man, but this was a little much.”
